Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. (Revelation 3:20, ESV)”
Where does your certainty come from?
Sometimes I think the biggest hurdle standing between people and God is the notion that we don’t need Him in order to live a full and happy life, let alone earn our way into heaven. With a sense of certainty, life convinces us we lack nothing.
We bury any seeds of doubt as deep as they will go and cover them with the measures of life. Still, a deep void gnaws at our hearts and we can’t help but hear the faint knocking of something more.
I have a confession:
There have been times when I’ve felt certain and without a need for God.
Is that shocking to hear from a Christian writer and woman who so passionately proclaims her faith?
It shouldn’t be. I’m also human.
I have put hope in my body. When it is performing well and looking great, it strengthens me.
I have put hope in money. When my bank account is full and my needs are met, it empowers me.
I have put hope in people. When they lift me up and bring me joy, they encourage me.
I have put hope in my goodness. When I serve others and sacrifice my own needs for them, it emboldens me.
But all of these failed to bring me the one thing I need most:
My body fails me, sometimes on a daily basis. Even when money is good, life just seems to get more expensive. And people? Well, they are as faulty as me — which bring me to my goodness and reminds me how far and how often I fall short.
Nothing in the world or in me is certain.
Do you see that in your own life? You should.
There is one certainty not just in this life but for eternity:
Some are thinking, “Why Jesus? Why not another way?” I can’t convince you of the answer to that question. Only God can open your heart to the truth. The answer is simply “because”. We didn’t like that answer as children, and we turn away from it still.
But that doesn’t change the answer.
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life and no one comes to reconciliation with God and eternal salvation except through Jesus Christ.
Because our Father says so.
The certainty that Jesus has brought to my life, to the depths of my soul, is something that can’t be earned, measured, traded, or found in anyone or anything else. He is my rock and my strong tower, my lighthouse in the storm, my unwavering strength, my peace beyond understanding.
Jesus is my Lord, my Savior, and my certainty beyond a shadow of a doubt.
I pray you will find the certainty of Jesus too. He is knocking at the door. All you have to do is open it and welcome Him into your life.
