When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. (Revelation 8:1)”
We forget the power of it.
The world is filled with noise. Traffic rushing. Sirens blaring. Horns screaming. Phones beeping, ringing, and vibrating in “silent” mode. Pens tapping on our desks. Music humming through our minds. Lists and calendars scroll through our busy, noisy thoughts.
What is complete silence?
What does the silence of Heaven sound like?
I think it’s so awesome and powerful, it’s incomprehensible. When Heaven is silent, I’m fairly certain the world won’t like what it hears next. God’s voice will be on the tip of Heaven’s tongue.
What is God doing in the silence?
In the silence, God is hearing the prayers and pleas of His saints. He’s breathing in each prayer-filled cry with the fragrance of our suffering and sacrifice. And God is preparing to breath out His answer to the world.
But first, silence.
The world could use more of God’s silence – to hang on His very breath.
We bask in the joy of the unspoken blessings He pours out each new day. He commands the sun to rise, and the winds to blow. He sends His grace out to the whole earth. He gives life to those who speak death. He sends mercy to those who have none. He answers prayers that go unappreciated. He answers prayers we don’t even bother to pray. Jesus sits on Heaven’s throne, extending His enduring love and great patience for every last one who will turn their heart to Him.
Oh that we would hear Him now!
I’m burdened by the words of the world – spoken, unspoken, typed, tweeted, texted words. The world is burning with words. We’ve forgotten how to listen and hear.
I’m learning to listen. But first, I have to silence the world. I have to choose every day to shut out the noise of the world and hear the quiet of God. I have to let the voice of God wash over me with the fragrance of His passionate love.
Remove the hurtful words, Lord. Let us see beyond the words. Let us hear. Let us see. Give us ears to hear the silence of You. The Word who needs no words. Write your voice on our hearts!
Hear what people are truly saying. We are fearful. We are hurt. We are angered. We are worried. We are yearning. We are confused. We are weary. We are burdened.
Come to me all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)”
Today, I’m resting in the Word and I hear what God hears.
I hear the voice of a friend who is weary and burdened. The world’s words tell us we shouldn’t and can’t possibly be friends. The world’s words condemn hope. The world’s words divide and label. But the Word of God heals. He covers. He unites. To those who listen, He teaches in the silence of His love.
Suddenly, the words and noise of the world have no power over me. I have rested in the truth of the Word and am filled with His love. The words I speak out are spoken from the love He’s placed in my heart.
Replace the hateful words of the world with the loving Word of God!
Love takes no pleasure in evil, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be restrained; where there is knowledge, it will be dismissed. (1 Cor. 13:6-8)”
The world need less words, and more of God’s love. We need less noise, and more silence. We need to rest in the quiet stillness of the Holy Spirit.
The silence of God awaits the moment of revelation. Hear him now, while He still speaks through His loving grace.
